Tamarisk Beetle

Tamarisk kills a lot of plants that grows although it helps one plant grow because it puts out so much salt. It helps grow what is called salt grass. The reason for this is that the Tamarisk puts so much salt water and salt out.
Tamarisk also has a predator. This predator is a Tamarisk Leaf Beetle. A scientist released a small amount and in a year this bug expanded quickly and widely.

Threats to the Ecosystem Because of dams the river is no longer able to flush salt from the ecosystems, which deters plant growth because of the super alkaline soil.Tamarisk are altering the ecosystem and replacing native vegetation.

Tamarisk provides poor habitat for native animals (little food value) 3673194233_e8e05b7761_m.jpg

Limits Animal and Human use of the waterways.
Kills the vegetation around them.(cottonwoods, willows, and adjacent dryland plant community Tamarisk blocks rivers and also cuts of trails, makes themselves a dame as well as blocking rafters from a along the river.
The Tamarisk beetle feeds only on tamarisk and, so far, it has shown no ability to cross over and eat other species.

Importance of EcosystemProvides a home for the Southwestern willow flycatcher.Provides Salt plants a nutrients to help them grow

Conservation PlanWhat we need to do? We need to plan how to stop this outburst of growing Tamarisk we had already put the Tamarisk beetle to reduce its growth. We can create more organizations like “Tamarisk Coalition” to help remove this plant from our river banks. We can also use chemical methods and herbicides to kill the shrub. We can feed it chemicals that might die it down or spray it with weed killer. that’s how we can plan to stop this Tamarisk.
